The Veterinary School of Lyon enjoys a characteristic which distinguishes it for ever from the others: it is the oldest in the world, created by Claude Bourgelat in 1761 thanks to Louis XV who conferred him the title of Royal School. From the School of Lyon and its smaller sister, built four years later also by the same founder, graduated students that in turn built and set up similar schools all over Europe during the end of the XVIIth century. In the XIXth century, the history of the School of Lyon was marked by big names which became the pioneers of the modern veterinarian sciences: Chauveau, Arloing, Galtier.
